POWELKA.
Powelka, who was remanded from Wellington, will be brought up to-day to Palmerston North, and, to-morrow, a series of trials will begin touching offences alleged to have beeu committed prior to his first escape from the Palmerston lock-up. This series consists of the following charges: Breaking and entering Dixon’s residence, Terrace End ; breaking and entering Miss M’Kay’s residence, and stealing therefrom; arson at Miss M’Kay’s residence ; theft of a bicycle ; escaping from Palmerston lock-up. All these charges will be heard before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M. The second series of alleged offences will be entered upon on Saturday and Monday. The' charges to be then dealt with are: High School fire; Millar and Giorgi’s fire; breaking and entering at Perry’s premises, Longburn; theft from Mrs Farland’s; breaking and entering Ashhurst railway station; breaking and entering the Manawatu Meat Company’s premises at Eongburn; also another case at Eongburn of breaking and entering.
Powelka will also be charged with the murder of Sergeant Maguire. This charge will be heard about May 6.
Mr C. A. Doughnan, Crown prosecutor, prosecutes, and Mr Gifford Moore defends. Detective Cassells and Siddells have had charge of the writing-up of the cases, and Sub-Inspector O’Donovan is in charge of police, operations. There will be from 30 to 40 witnesses.
