BURIAL OF SERGT MAGUIRE.
AN IMPRESSIVE OCCASION. WELLINGTON, April 17. Tito burial of Scrgt. Maguire took place this afternoon at Ka-rori Cemetery. There wits a. very large attendance. The hearse was preceded and surrounded by nearly a hundred members of the Police Force. About seventy carriages followed, and there wore many people on foot. Tile cortege was about half a mile long. The cortege left, the Tramway Hotel, Adelaide road, for St. Joseph’s Church at 1,45 p.m. The Minister for Justice (Hon. Hr. Findlay) was present, together with Mr C. E. Matthews, Chief Clerk of the Police Department, representing the Commissioner (Mr F. Waldegrave), who is in Palmerston, and was unable to be present on account of the death of Ids wife. Inspector Ellison came from Palmerston to represent the police engaged there. Besides the members of the police force who wore not on duty, there was also it large gathering ol the Permanent Artillery and gaol Winders. A Requiem Mass for the repose of tho St. Joseph's Church on .Saturday morning by tho Vicar-Goneral (Very Rev. Fiither O'Shea). Rev. Fathers Venning arid Hurley were present in the sanctuary. and there was a- large congregation, including the near relatives of tho Into olileer and a. nmqber of members of tile police force. The hearers were Sorgt Rutledge, and Constables Hoyle, Callings. Fisher, and Kenealy. Similar Masses arc to be said in Palmerston during the week.
