MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday at Sandon. Present: Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), Henson, Masters, R. B. McKenzie, G. Kendall, J. H. Dalton and Barber. The following letters were received :

From Paymaster-General, notifying payment of £B4 13s yd tramway “paid-ons.” From same, notifying payment of £IOO, last instalment of £3OO loan for drainage. From same, notifying payment of £BBI 5s subsidy for last year. P'rora Treasury notifying that as no part of the £4OO Tiraroa road loan and £6OO Oroua Downs drainage loans had been paid over, fresh application would have to be made for those loans under the Local Bodies Advances Act. From Horowhenua County Council, asking Manawatu to contribute half the cost of repairing the old Ferry road, and stating that Crs Venn and Stephenson would like to meet Councillors representing the Moutoa end of the county on the road. From the Foxtou Harbour Board, expressing willingness to contribute a subsidy towards the interest on a loan for the road to Foxton beach. —From Foxton Borough Council, stating the matter had been held over till next meeting.

From Mr A. H. Hall, re closing road at Moutoa.

From Cr McKenzie, reporting that Crs Dalton, Barber and himself had made the following arrangement with Mr O’Grady, contractor for drainage at Kaikopukopu lake: To complete the drain so as to increase the depth at the lake by 2ft on an even grade from the fence to the lake at 30s per chain.

From Messrs Richardson and Co., stating that the new tram engine was on board the s.s. Rangatira, From Mr W. J, Shailer, complaining of the road at Himatangi. From Mr H. G. Hammond, calling attention to the state of the road at Moutoa.

Mr Drew reported the balances : General account, credit, £661 4s 3d ; loan account, credit, £915 10s fid; total, £157 14 s Available for expenditure _ to March 31, 1910 ; Rongotea riding, £1 15s 2d; Awahpu riding, £2 19s lid ; Whirokino subdivision, £29 12s Sd. Over-expended: Saudou riding, £6 14s 3d ; Mt. Stewart, £l2 15s id ; Waitohi, £lB 4s lid ; Carnarvon, £152 5 s 2d ; Kawakawa, £149 12s 6d._ In connection with the notification from the Treasury as to applying for loans to the State Advances to Local Bodies Board, it was decided to protest against the non-granting of the loans although all the preliminaries had been completed in time under the Loans to Local Bodies Act. In reference to the letter from the Horowhenua County Council, Cr Barber and G. Hickford, County Overseer, were appointed to meet the Horowhenua Council at a suitable date. No action is to be taken at present in regard to the formation of a road to the Foxton Beach. The following alteration was made in the rate roll —W. L. Lobb to G. Reay lots 27-8, 30-2, section 463. Bkach Road. The Council considered that the sum of £2OOO is necessary to complete it satisfactorily, and is prepared to ask the ratepayers to borrow one-third of the actual cost up to that amount, if the Government or the other local bodies interested will find the balance. The manager of the Sandon tramway reported that during the month the traffic was good and showed a credit of £4B 7s ?d. Extra items of expenditure were; Sleepers £l2 8s 9d, extra wages £6 Ss. The principal articles of merchandise carried were: Grain 40 tons, minerals 53 J2 tons, merchandise 144 tons, metal 270 yards, timber 42,150 feet, wool 45 bales, flax 36 trucks, fares £l2 16s 4d,
