CONCERT.
The concert held last night in aid of the State school picnic fund, was attended by a moderate audience. The programme was arranged by Mr T. Betty and contained some very excellent items. There were several vocalists new to Foxtou audiences namely, Miss Hopper, who has recently arrived from Sydney, and who possesses a very cultured voice, Messrs Chrystall and Buclass. The other contributors were old favourites. The glees, quartettes and trios were special features of the bill-of-fare. All the items were keenly appreciated and a number encored. The programme was opened by the orchestral party consisting of Misses Furrie (piano), Cook (violin), Messrs Gabites (violin), Simmons (one stringed violin) and Betty (baritone). The orchestra also contributed a spirited selection in the second half: song, “Mary,” Mr Buclass and as an encore ‘‘Aflon Waters”; song, “I Know a Garden,” Miss Signal ; recitation, “How Jones Minor Recited,” Mr Alex Rimraer ; a very pleasing vocal duet by Mrs A. and Miss Jeuks ; Mr Chrystall received a hearty response for his rendering of ‘‘My Pretty Jaue,” and responded with ‘‘Within a Mile of Fdinboro’ Town” ; Mrs Boyes’ pleasing voice was heard to advantage in ‘‘Vainkas Song” ; the glee party, and we hope we shall hear more from them at future concerts, contributed two items, “Carnovale” and ‘‘Calm be Thy Slumbers.” The members of the party are Mesdames Clemett, A. Jenks, Boyes, Misses Jeuks and Signal, and Messrs Buclass, Betty, A. Jenks, Wrigley; little Miss Marion Levett, charmingly attired as a Dutch maid, delighted the audience with her rendering of “Maggie Schneider,” and had to respond to an undeniable encore ; Miss Hopper was heard to advantage in “Tell me my Heart” and received a vociferous encore for her number “The Cows are in the Clover.” This lady’s services will be a great acquisition at future concerts ; Mr W. Cook was in excellent voice and saug “The Better Baud,” with violin obligato, and in response to a well deserved encore, “My Beloved Queen” ; the brass quartette, .“Summer,” by members of the baud was evidence of careful training and much appreciated ; the male trio, “The Wreath,” by Messrs Wrigley, Betty and A. Jenks, was one of those rare items on concert programmes and we are pleased to notice that more part singing is being introduced into local concerts ; Mr Simmons’ excellent rendering of the old and familiar tune “Inthe Gloaming,” on his onestringed violin, was perhaps the most novel feature of the entertainment ; Mr A- Rimmer saug “Nancy Lee” with happy humour and Mr Chrystall “Bonny Mary of Argyle.” The accompaniments were played by Mrs Boyes, Misses Cook, Jenks and Furrie.
The Chairman of the school committee briefly thanked the audience and performers for their assistance, aud particularly Mr Betty lor organising the concert. The financial result of the affair should nearly wipe off the indebtedness incurred in providing the children with their annual outing. The committee desire to thank the Band for playing selections prior to the commencement of the concert.
