NEW STATE COAL MINE.
REMARKS BY HON. R M’KENZIE.
“The secret is not out,” said the Mon. R, M’Kcuzie, Minister for Mines, when the statement made by Mr J. W. Ellis, of Hamilton, regarding the site of the proposed State coal mine in the North Island was referred to him. “I am not in a position to say whether Mr Kllis or the Engineer-in-Chief of Public Works discovered this particular seam of coal or any other seam of coal when locating the route of the Main Trunk line, but I am in a position to say that neither Mr Kllis nor Mr Holmes reported anything about it to the Public Works Department. Further, the locality stated in the paragraph submitted to me by no means corresponds with the locality ot the seam which the Mines Department has located, and which it is expected will turn out to be very valuable. The site is at present being prospected in order to ascertain the extent of the find, and I hope to be able to make a definite announcement on the subject before long.”
