OF INTEREST TO TEACHERS.
Auckland, March 31.
At the quarterly conference of country school teachers held to-day a letter was read from the Education Board to the effect that it could not see its way to grant the request that country service should carry extra marks. Mr Ellis spoke strongly on this matter, and urged the executive to keep steadily In view the question of offering educational inducement to teachers to go into the country. At its last meeting the Board was bewailing the fact that it could not get young men to go into country districts, but this was not surprising under existing circumstances.
Mr Lamb thought a minimum of at least three years of country service should be required of teachers, and if this were so it would give those who had put up with social banishment for so long a chance to get into the towns. This was a matter that affected all the Boards in the Dominion. Several of the members said at present if a man once got into the country he was generally there for good. It was decided to refer the question to the executive for a report to be made at the next meeting.
