SLY-GROG SELLING.

At the Magistrate Court, Wellington, yesterday, Mary Spencer was charged with having sold liquor to Arthur J. R. Palmer, without being licensed to do so. Probationer Muuro deposed that he paid several visits to the accused’s house in Cambridge Terrace, and obtained on oue occasion, five drinks lor two shillings, and on another, four for eighteenpeuce. The money he spent on the liquor had been refunded to him. Probationer Palmer also gave evidence, stating that Sub-Inspector Norwood had told them beforehand that any money spent in liquor would be refunded by the Police Department. Sergeant Rutledge corroborated the evidence of the probationer. In defence, Mrs Spencer stated that she kept a board-ing-house at 70 Cambridge Terrace. She had given the men drinks, but no money passed. She had never sold liquor, she said. Probationer Munro had endeavoured to force money upon her. Thomas Robertson, farm labourer, also gave evidence for the defence.

The magistrate entered a conviction, and inflicted a fine of ,£2O, fixing default at one month’s imprisonment. Seven days were allowed in which to pay the fine.
