A body has been found in the bed of the river Waimakariri. It is supposed to be that of Robert Barker, an elderly man, alleged to be of weak intellect, who has been missing since February 2(1. The police have not yet returned to town with the body.

W. Anderson, a butcher, died in the hospital this morning as the result of a trap accident at Inglewood on Wednesday,whereby his leg was broken. The manager o( the Taranaki I'elrolenm Company reported to the directors to-night that though the gale played havoc with the derricks, it had not damaged the machinery. It is expected to have Nos. x and 2 repaired and ready to resume work on Tuesday, and No. 3 at the end of next week. Since Friday last, whilst the bores were closed down, some 90 barrels of oil have been secured at No. 2, having flowed of its own accord between the casings ; from March 12 to March 24, 45 barrels at No. 3 ; from January 5 to date, No. 2 has never ceased to flow oil and water, with silt generally. Dunkdin, April 1.

Henry Alexander, proprietor of the Globe Hotel, now used as a boarding-house, was to-day fined on a charge of sly-grog selling. This constituted a second offence, he having been fined in July, 1909. A second charge was dismissed and a third withdrawn.
