An old man named Charles Elliott had his leg broken by a kick from a horse at Palmerston North yesterday morning. The old man was conveyed to the hospital, where he is doing as well as possible, though his age is much against him. A poll was held yesterday in the Napier Harbour rating district, on the Harbour Board’s proposal to borrow ,£300,000 for the completion of the breakwater aud harbour. The voting was as follows : For 1963 votes, against 486. As a three-fifths majority was required, the proposal was thus lost by 107 voles.
A serious fire occurred in the Victoria Hotel, Naseby, on Tuesday night. The hotel is owned by Mrs Black, and occupied by W. B. Allan. When discovered the fire had a very firm hold, aud before it was suppressed the interior had suffered very severely, only the kitchen, billiard room, aud one bedroom escaping. The building was insured for ,£650, aud the furniture and stock for ,£435 in the Victoria office.
Messrs Ross aud Co., of the Bon Marche, Palmerston N., announce their first grand show ol latest London novelties for autumn aud winter wear in stylish coats, costumes, millinery, blouses and dress goods. It is claimed that this season’s importations eclipse all former occasions in extent and variety, and the firm are auxious that visitors from this district to Palmerston will make a point of looking through their warehouse, aud inspecting the goods aud values now at their disposal.*
