SCHOOL PICNIC.
The weather yesterday morning was very threatening for the above annual picnic and as a result a number of parents would notallow their children to take the risk of a wetting. Over 200 scholars, accompanied by the school staff, members of committee and parents assembled at the wharf and embarked in Messrs Levin and Co’s, new punt, which was found insufficient to accommodate the party and Mr Signal placed another punt at their disposal. The trip down was very enjoyable and a lauding was effected at the North Spit at about n. 30 a.m, Mr Perreau had lunch ready and the children did justice to the meal. The scholars were nut allowed to wander out of sight and after a wade in the river the bugles called the assemble and races for prizes purchased by the committee were got off. Races were won by the following children : —Girls, 8 and under, D. Robinson r, J. Prew 2, A. Tozer 3; boys, do., B. Hornblow 1, D. Ball 2, A. McEwen 3 ; girls, 10 years, N. Balliu 1, G. Collins 2, N. McEwen 3 ; boys, do, C. Coley 1, M. Robinson 2, J. Walbuttou 3 ; girls, 12 years, G. Robinson 1, N. Collins 2, M. Effelbeiu 3 ; boys, do., W. Crewes v 1, P. Weller 2, K. McEwen 3 ; girls, 14 years, A. Knapp 1, A. Anderson 2, J. Hendersons ; boys, do., L- Johnson 1, E. Haslett 2, L. Burstou 3 ; infant girls, D. Robinson 1, J. Chung Wah 2. R. Perreau 3. A number of other minor and novel races and skipping competitions were got off. The school championship created a fair amount of interest. The prize was a medal presented by Messrs G. Coley, Speirs and Hornblow, second 5s and third 2s 6d. The distance was 220yds. The boys got away to a good start and McDonald was the first to breast the tape closely attended by L. Aitken 2, S. Robinson 3. About 12 competed. Tea was partaken of at 3.30 p.m., and the children were all aboard at 4.30. The trip home was marred by rain, but this did not in auy way damage the spirits ot the scholars.
There was not a single mishapv-C and the children behaved admirably. Before landing three hearty cheers were given for Mr Signal, the committee and headmaster. The committee desire to thank Messrs Collins, M. Walker and Chung Wah for donations of sweets and fruit, and especially Mr Signal who conveyed the children to and from the Beach free of charge and gave a donation of los on behalf of Messrs Levin and Co.
