The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday March 22, 1910. THE BEACH ROAD.

Spkarinc. to our representative yesterday in reference to the Beach Road, Cr Coley said he was of opinion that the Borough Council should not he called upon to contribute anything towards the cost of same. He said that a number of lessees of beach sections were piepared to be rated up to 15s per year aud as the Harbour Board is now drawing a profit from the endi wment at the Heads, and a road would still fuither increase the value of the endowment, the Board should be able to render the County Council the extra assistance by annual grant to make up the balance required to meet interest and sinking fund on a loan for the purpose. Fie said further that the Council had already formed aud metalled a portion of the road in the county area. In reply to a question as to cost of construction he said in his opinion it would run into ,£2OOO.

Cr W. E. Barber, member for this riding has handed to us the engineer’s approximate cost of the road. The statement prepared by the engineer is as follows: “Should the opportunity arise for the Council to make a road to the Beach, I think llje route along the road reserve would be the proper place for the road, which would be out of reach ot spring tides aud drift wood. Although the route is fairly level with the exception of one or two sand hills, the work of construction of a road to the Manawatu Heads at Foxton will be more costly than anticipated by most people. In the first place we have the drift sand to deal with which will not be an easy matter to cope against, aud will require a good deal of iasciue work and blinding to keep it from encroaching and destroying the road when made. The next matter and the most important is the metal. As there is no metal adjacent to the road line, it will have to be delivered by tram or railway to the end of the road, which would cost about 5s per yard. My estimate to complete ,a metalled road to the sanatorium is £2OOO.
