YESTERDAY’S POLL.

PROPOSAL DEFEATED

The interest displayed in yesterday’s poll was not such as could reasonably have been expected when such an important pro posal was before the ratepayers, as only 246 out of a roll number of 423 look the trouble to record their votes. The chief opponents of the scheme had vehicles running almost throughout the day, but the supporters of the proposal had no systematic method of campaign, and it was not until late in the afternoon that a conveyance was provided to bring supporters to the poll. 1 u Main Street voters going in the direction of the polling both were continually button-holed by the supporters or opponents of the proposal and several very heated arguments took place. When the Returning Officer declared the result of the poll, shortly before half-past seven, there was only about 50 persons present and no demonstration at all was made, except a feeble cheer. The polling was : For the proposal ... 90 Against the proposal... 150 Informal •• 6 Majority against ... 60

Total votes recorded ... 246 Number on the roll ... 422

The Returning Officer, Mr Alf. Fraser, is to be complimented for his promptness in officially declaring the returns.
