WATER AND DRAINAGE

[to the editor.] population of the borough at the last census was 1,300 odd, allowing for 400 outside the proposed drainage area, this would leave 900, add 100 for inciease, this would mean that every man, woman and child in the above area would become liable lor 2000 each for a very experimental and out-of-date scheme. It is a well-known fact that the sewers in Carterton give out a filthy smell and a nurse told the writer that there was more typhoid and other sickr.es in Carterton since the inauguration of the drainage, attributed to the smells arising from the drains. —I am etc., Advocate ok Good Water.

[ln order to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the last clause in the above letter we sent the following telegram this morning to the editor (W. F. Roydhouse, Esq.J of our Carterton contemporary, the “Wairarapa Daily News’’ : “ Poll of ratepayers on loan proposals for water and drainage is to Ire taken to-morrow. A corresspondent in to-day’s issue states that the smell from the Carterton sewers is very objectionable and also that there was more typhoid and other sickness in Carterton since the inauguration of the drainage system. Please reply immediate.’’
