SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the school committee was held in the schoolhonse on Tuesday evening last. Present :—Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev (1. K. Aitken (secretary), Hetty, Bullard, Henderson, Alex Speirs and the headmaster. An apology was received from Mr Read.

Correspondence was read from the Education Board in reference to equipment to supplement simple aid chart.—lt was decided to refer this matter to the headmaster with power to collect for purchase of same.

From same, re New Zealand Ensign. —It was decided to ask the Board to supply one. A lengthy letter was read from the Wanganui and West Coast School Committees’ Association, announcing that a conference would be held on the 17 th inst. —

It was decided that the secretary attend as delegate from this committee and enter a strong protest against the reduced capitation grant. It was decided to notify the Board of the inadequacy of the capitation grant. It was pointed out that In order to carry on the committee would have to raise from to £2O annually in excess of the quarterly grant. Accounts were passed for payment.

A tender was accepted for construction of cupboard for cadet purposes, conditionally that the work was paid for out of cadet capitation grant. The headmaster stated that not having received a notification of the meeting he had not prepared the monthly report. The visitors also apologised for not having carried out their duties and were appointed for the current month.

The Chairman stated that in view of the prevailing epidemic of whooping cough and diphtheria he had asked Mr Fraser to obtain the Board’s sanction for fumigating the school. The Chairman’s action was endorsed.

The meeting then adjourned till yesterday morning in order to finally arrange re school picnic. At the adjourned meeting there were present: The Chairman and Messrs Aitkeu, Betty, Bullard, Levett and Speirs.—lt was decided to hold the picnic at the Beach on Monday next, 21st. The children to leave the wharf at'9.3o a.m. The catering was left in the hands of the Chairman and Mr Speirs. Messrs Levett, Coley and Bullard were authorised to procure prizes for races, etc. A sub-committee was appointed consisting of Messrs Betty (convenor), Bullard, Levett, and Coley to arrange concert to raise funds to defray cost of picnic.

The Chairman referred to Mr Signal's generous offer to convey the children to and from the Beach free of cost. Adults are to be charged is return. After discussing other details the meeting rose.
