The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, March 15, 1910. WATER AND DRAINAGE.

Wk hope ratepayers are not forgetting the fact that a poll for a loan of for water and drainage takes place on Friday next. The polling hours aie between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and the polling booth is situated in the municipal offices. The ratepayers list of all who are entitled to vote may be obtained on application to the Town Clerk. By the way, every ratepayer interested in the present loan proposals should procure a copy as it reveals the valuation upon which the rate to be struck is based and, further, it discloses the fact that a re-valua-tion of the borough in needed. Whether the present loan proposals are carried or not this matter needs immediate attention.

Friday’s poll will afford those ratepayers who have the health and prosperity of their fellow townspeople at heart, an opportunity to carry the loan. It is well to remember how impossible it is to obtain such benefits without making a little sacrifice. Is not the health of your little ones and the cleanliness of your back yards of greater importance than the expenditure of a few pounds per year ? How many of us squander ten times the amount of the proposed rate annually in things which are of no lasting value ? Is it not better to remove the causes of diphtheria—that dreaded scourge which has in the past exacted heavy toll in human lives from our midst—by adopting an up-to-date water and drainage scheme ? What sound arguments have been adduced by opponents of the scheme to make us alter our opinion ? None. A subterfuge has been urged in favour of the Shannon scheme.

* * :|: Because other local bodies are enriched with valuable endowments is no reason why we should rot out.

Foxton in the past has been content to drowse in the slough of despond. Golden opportunities to push the town forward have been missed. Is this not an evidence of selfishness and apathy on the part of our leading citizens ? We hope ratepayers will not allow a further reproach to be cast upon us, but that there will be a shaking up of the dry bones on Friday next.
