THE BEACH ROAD.

DISSCUSbED BY COUNCIL

At last night’s Council meeting a letter was read from the County Clerk, stating that the Manawatu County Council had again been approached in reference to the construction of a road to the Beach, but the Council was not in a position financially to carry out the work unaided, and asking if the Foxton Council would assist if the County Council goes on with the work. Cr Stewart moved that the Foxton Borough Council take such action as may lie considered judicious to help in raising a guarantee fund for raising a loan of say £ISOO for the construction of the much needed Beach road. In speaking to the motion, the mover referred to the necessity of having the road constructed as early as possible. He did not think there would be any trouble in raising sufficient money annually to provide interest and sinking fund on a loan for the work. He considered that there would be 110 trouble in collecting annually rates amounting to £3O on the sectionsiat the Beach, and he felt sure the Harbour Board would make an annual grant. This would only leave an amount of about £25 to be paid by the Foxton Council, and surely the advantages from such a road would amply repay this expenditure.

Cr Robinson seconded the motion.

Cr Gibbs said he was against the Borough Council contributing anything towards the cost of the road, as it was outside the borough boundary. It the section holders at the Beach wanted a road they should pay for it. There were a number of unformed streets within the borough and these should be formed before outside roads.

Cr Levclt endorsed the remarks made by Cr Gibbs. He thought the matter should be held over until there was a full meeting of the Council, and movfed as an amendment that the question of forming a road to the Beach be held over until the next meeting of the Council. The amendment was seconded by Cr Gibbs, and on being put was carried. With a view of obtaining information to be put pelore the next meeting, Cr Robinson then moved that the County Council be aked to supply a rough estimate of the cost of a road to the Beach, and whom they suggest be parties to the cost of same.

The motion was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman, Crs Robinson, Stewart and Rimmer supporting it, and Crs Speirs, Gibbs and Levett voting against it.
