The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, March 12, 1910. RISE IN SUGAR.
Local storekeepers have been notified of a rise of 10s per ton on sugar by the colonial sugar monopoly. It is not long since that the Government reunited the duty on sugar amounting to the consumer would reap the benefit. A remission was also made on kerosene. But the result has been, in both cases, that the country has been poorer of the duty remitted, the consumer is compelled to pay within a fraction of what he paid before a paternal Government remitted the duty and the octopus fattens. Since the duty was taken off sugar the monopoly has periodically bumped up the prices until now the wholesale figure has increased to within los of the remitted duty. We are not in a position to give a reason for the increase, neither are the retailers. The only thing for'the consumer to do is to pay up the difference and look pleasant.
