WATER AND DRAINAGE.
[to the editor.]
Sir, —I sincerely the water and drainage loan for the borough will be, carried, and I cannot understand why there should be any quibbling about the matter. Supposing the rates are increased a few pounds, sir, surely the benefits to be derived by the removal of the present disgusting sanitary arrangements are alone worth the extra, apart from the domestic conveniences of the water, and the benefits that our flower and vegetable gardens will receive. The arguments I have heard so far, from opponents, are very transparent. If some people could have their way they would be content to perpetuate germ beds of disease in their back premises. The golden calf is their god. Foxton must thank Providence that it has not been fire swept before this. Think of the loss a fire in Main Street would entail. Would the insurance offices even now, sir, take the risks they do if they knew how we are situated ? I venture to say no. In this respect opponents are penny wise and pound foolish. One or two wiseacres set themselves up to question the report of the engineer. I for one am prepared to place my faith in Mr Climie, an expert with a reputation whose report is carefully prepared, based on knowledge, rather than be influenced by bald statements of opponents- May I suggest, sir, that those who have to thank Foxton for their preseu t happy position should in turn be prepared to make a little sacrifice for the good of the town and the health and happing •'f its people. Apologising for the space I may take in your paper and hoping the champions of progress and health may win at the poll. lam etc. — P. T. Robinson.
