THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

SHIPPING FREIGHTS

UNION COMPANY MAKES CONCESSIONS.

When the coal strike developed in Anstralia the Union S.S. Company raised the freight on flax to the Commonwealth 15s per ton (there is a considerable amount of fibre sent across from here). Recently the New Zealand Flaxmillers' Association asked the Union S.S. Company to remove this impost as it had most prejudically affected the trade. The Company replied that they would consider the question although there was no immediate prospect of the strike concluding and it had been with great difficulty that they had secured coal at considerable cost to keep up the regular sailings of the Union steamers. This further telegram to the President, Mr Bell, announces a satisfactory conclusion to the matter:—

President Flaxmillers, Palmerston North.

Having decided cancel strike increase of freight on shipments of flax and tow to Australia, and are advising shippers at the ports accordingly. This is the only exception to our increased rates, and has been made to enable New Zealand shippers to retain trade. Union S.S. Coy., Dunedin
