The cricket match Australia v. Canterbury resulted in a draw. Canterbury scored 321 and 259. Australia compiled 240 in their first innings and at the time for drawing stumps had scored 307 for the loss of eight wickets. With reference to the find of a number of lifebelts on the Canterbury beach last week, expert opinion in Wellington inclines to the view that probably the belts are a number which have been condemned, and thrown overboard when not far distant from the New Zealand coast. The “find” recalls that made near Cape Maria some months ago, when a number of old belts were picked up on the beach, and were subsequently proved to have been thrown overboard from the steamer Cornwall on a trip from Sydney to Auckland. At any rate, suggested one authority, It would be easy enough to ascertain whether the Canterbury belts were condemned or not, by taking say twenty of them and making a test to see if their buoyancy had decreased, or whether the linen casing had deteriorated to any extent. The behaviour of the buoys in the water, under test conditions, should thus throw some light on their origin.
