BOWLING GREEN.

A SITE OBTAINED

At Thursday night’s Council meeting Cr Ross introduced a deputation from the Bowling Club, comprising Messrs Dr. Mandl, Hennessy and Witchell. Mr Hennessy acted as spokesman and stated that the Club was on the lookout for a suitable section for the laying down of a bowling green. The most suitable site that could be found was the borough reserve at the corner of the Avenue and Russell Street. They had bought the lease from the present lessee and asked that the right of renewal of same at the same rental be given them lor a further period of 2i years from the expiry of the present lease. They proposed to spend at least ,£3OO on the section and would create a beauty spot of what was now an unsightly corner.

The section in question is at present leased to Mr F. Gall at £2 per annum and the lease has about three years to run. Cr Robinson objected to the land being disposed of in this manner and contended that same should be put up to public competition. Further, the Council had nothing before it to say that the present lessee desired to forfeit his lease or transfer it to the bowling club. Mr Hennessy produced a letter from Mr Gall to the secretary of the bowling club in vshich he offered to transfer his interest in the lease to the club. The Town Clerk read a section of the Municipal Corporation Act which provided that a Council could grant to the present lessee of certain reserves a renewal for 21 years at the same rental or otherwise. Cr Adams moved and it was seconded by Cr Speirs that the Foxton Bowling Club be granted a 21 years lease of section 44 Avenue Road, at the present rental. Crs Ross and Speirs spoke in favour of the proposal. The motion on being put was carried, Cr Robinson alone dissenting.
