HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A general meeting of members of the Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chamber last night. The President (Mr A, Speirs) occupied the chair and there was a large attendance of members. The following judges and stewards were appointed for the Autumn Show, to be held on the 9th and 10th of next mouth ; —Class 1 and 2, pot plants and cut blooms, judge, Mr A. M. Wightou of Palmerston North, stewards, Mesdames Greig and Boyes ; classes 3 and 4, fruit and vegetables, judge, Mr F. W. Mayo, of Palmerston North, stewards, Messrs Bullard, Henderson and Patterson ; classes 5 and 6, cookery and home industries, judge, Mrs Nash of Palmerston North, stewards, Miss Neylon and Mrs Kempster ; class 7, farm produce, judge, Mr Hodder of Palmerston North, stewards, Messrs Brown and Whyte ; class 8, decorative, judge, Mrs Witchell, stewards, Mesdames C. Robinson and C. Symons; class 9, miscellaneous, judge, Mr Yerex; children’s class, judge, Mrs Witchell, stewards, Mesdames J. and R. H. Barber and Jenks; school work, judge, Mrs Opie of Palmerston North. Mr W. Petrie was appointed judge of the dressed fibre and Mr Shadbolt of the dressed saddle of mutton.
Special prizes in the children’s classs were donated by Mrs Hamer and Mr Patterson, the former promising a prize value 12s 6d for the best specimen of plain sewing by girls under 15, and a further prize of 5s for the best hem stitched handkerchief by girls under 9, and Mr Patterson a prize of 5s for best dressed doll by children under 12. Mr J. T. Pevett also donated a special prize of five shillings for most points in children’s cooking, and a donation of £1 is from an anonymous donor will be awarded as a points prize in the farm produce class and Messrs Yates and Co.'s seeds, value 10s 6d, will be given as a second prize. Mr P. Hennessy also made a donation of 10s 6d towards the funds of the Society.
It was decided to open the show at 2.30 o’clock in| the afternoon of March 9th and to ask Mr Newman, M.P., to perforpi the ceremony.
