The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, February 22, 1910. THE BEACH ROAD.

Discussing the subject of a decent road to the Beach with Cr W. E- Barber, the representative for this distiict on the Manawatu County Council, our reporter was informed that it could hardly be expected that the County Council would construct and maintain a road which would not benefit more than two or three county ratepayers. It would be manifestly unfair that such expense should be borne by ratepayers who would not derive any benefit therefrom. Cr Barber was of opinion that the Council, as the controlling body, would be willing to bear a proportion of the cost of a loan and arrange the details, provided the Foxton Borough Council, Harbour Board and Rands Department undertook a fair proportion of the cost. In reply as to the best possible route tor a road, Cr Barber said that would be a question for the eugeeuer to decide.

The Mayor of Foxton is just as anxious as the residents at the seaside that a road should be formed and metalled, and has expressed the opinion that the Borough Council should contribute a proportion of the cost. We feel sure that owners of sections would be willing to pay a rate for such a benefit if the Harbour Board guaranteed its quota of the loan. We are not in a position to say what the Rands Department would do in the matter, but if they were approached by the County on the subject it is fair to assume that they would assist their tenants in the matter. We hope the bodies concerned will move in the subject before the winter sets in.
