The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, February 12, 1910. THE BEACH ROAD.
Tim road to the Beach was again discussed by the Mauawatu County Council at its meeting this week. The discussion arose out of the receipt of a letter from the Foxton Harbour Board asking the Council to make a new road to the Beach. Chairman Wilson stated that ‘ ‘ the matter was of considerable importance to Foxton, as on a recent visit to the beach there were some 350 people there, all of whom drew their supplies from Foxton.” He thought the best course was “ to raise a loan for the work, the Foxton borough contributing a certain proportion of the amount required.” Members generally concurred, and it was decided 1 ‘to approach the Foxton Borough Council on the question.” It is estimated that the cost of construction of such road would be We are inclined to the belief that the above estimate is greatly in excess of the sum required. However, it would be manifestly unfair to expect the Mauawatu County Council to bear the whole burden of such loan as the road would not benefit more than a dozen county ratepayers. Foxton will benefit both directly and indirectly from an improved means of access to this favourite seaside resort which is increasing in popularity every year. Recognising this it is only fair that the Foxton Borough Council, Harbour Board and Bands Department should bear a share of the loan. We hope the Borough Council will view the matter in this light when the communication from the County Council is considered at its next meeting.
