The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, February 8, 1910. OUSTED FROM OFFICE.

The Napier Borough Solicitor has advised the Mayor that live Councillors, in addition to Councillor Thomson, namely, Councillors Crowley, A. J. Williams, Eagleton, Widestrom, and K. Beecham, have rendered their seats vacant by reason of exceeding the legal limitation in the matter of supplies to the Corporation. The act provides a heavy penalty for any Mayor or Councillor who retains bis seat while directly or indirectly in receipt of profit from the Council. The person to take action against such offenders is the auditor but how is he to know, unless the information is passed on ? It is safe to assume that not only in Napier, but in a great many other towns in the Dominion the law in this connection is being broken. Aspirants for municipal honours should, before seeking office, have at least a reading knowledge of the Act, and an understanding of their responsibilities as councillors.
