CLOSER SETTLEMENT.

We are informed that a petition containing over a hundred signatures has been forwarded to Mr 1?. Newman, M.P, for Mauawatu asking the Government to acquire the property of Mr John Gimmell, for closer settlement under the Lands for Settlement Act. Mr Newman has forwarded the petition on to the Premier. We are also informed that petitions are being signed praying the Government to acquire the Highden estate near Awahuri, also Mr Keiller’s property at Raumai, near Bulls, for the same purpose. All the land mentioned is eminently suited for dairying j purposes.
