SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the Foxton School Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Thursday night. Present Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev. G. K. Aitken (secretary), G. Coley, Alex. Speirs, and S. Reid. The headmaster was also in attendance.

The headmaster’s report, as follows, was read and received I have to submit the following report for the period ending December 3 1st, 1909 : —Attendance ; The average attendance for the quarter ending December 31st was 287.9, out of an average roll number of 325.8, while the average attendance for the year was 263.2, out of an average roll of 310.7. Staff: Owing to the increased attendance, the school is entitled to another pupil teacher, or to an assistant in place of two pupil teachers, but so far I have received no notice of the additional appointment. The report of the annual inspection visit, made on October 14th, is siGmitted herewith, A rope is required so that the flag may be hoisted on occasions stated in the Board’s regulations. I should like to see definite plans drawn up for fencing arrangements or school gardens, etc., as early a| possible, so that advantage could be taken of occasions such as Arbor Day, when much could be done by the pupils themselves to beautify the grounds. As will be seen by the inspection report, I am desirous of establishing a school garden, so that the practical side of the teaching of science will be attended to. A pane of glass is required in one of the windows of the infant room. The catch of this window is also broken. I notice that; one of the panels of the sliding partition in this room catches on the floor; I think a plane would remedy this. It was resolved to write to the Education Board, asking that the services of an assistant be obtained in lieu of two pupil teachers. —The headmaster stated that he had already communicated with the chief Inspector on this point. The minor repairs, etc., mentioned in the headmaster’s report, were left in the hands of the headmaster, Messrs Speirs and Read. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Friday, 28th inst., for the purpose of deciding what steps are to be taken in reference to improving the school grounds. The headmaster stated that he was anxiou s to take up scientific gardening this season. Visitors were appointed for the month, and accounts passed for payment, after which the meeting rose.
