WHEN SHOULD WE DRINK?
Many of our folks have already acquired the habit of when not to eat, but some are still puzzled as to when to driuk. Horace Fletcher’s dictum is that we should chew liquids as well as foods, and this has been puzzling the savant as well as the layman in America and Europe. The Parisians, ever on the look out for some new sensation, have been particularly worried about the liquid side oi Fletcherism. Ee Matin, one of the most enterprising of the daily journals oDParis, has been getting the views of leading medical men on the when-to-drink problem, also how much. “One ought to drink with meals,” says Dr. Moutier, ‘‘but never before. It is important, however, to consume at least a pint and a quarter of water within the twenty-four hours.” Prof. Doleris had a different way of thinking : “The less we drink at meals the better for the indigestion, and it is better still if we only drink alter eating. The human bodv requires liquid, which should be taken as far as possible out of meal times.” Dr. Eancereaux points the way towards disaster: “One ought to drink as much as one’s thirst requires, but it is always well to be moderate. Not to drink, however, would be far more disastrous. The fashion introduced some two or three years ago of eating without drinking has only had unfavourable results. One should never drink just before a meal.” Yet another authority quoted is Prof. Marcel Eabbe, who advises ; “Drink moderately, but as little as possible with meals. What is drunk at meals should be at the end or at intervals during the meals, never before.”
