Welter, with perhaps the exception of Happy New Year and Attention, both of whom credited themselves with seconds during the holidays.

If Mundic could only run up to reputation the others may just as well stay at home, but form is the best guide at picking winners, and the heads will be found going for Thetis and Purakau. The latter requires a good boy on top to get the best out of her.

The Club made a good move when they placed the Dash Hack on the programme, and it has induced sixteen acceptors, including several winners. Punters are set a big task to pick it in one, and the books are sure to score heavily. This scribe knows an absolute moral in this half mile flutter, but the Gaming Act stands in the way of making everything known to the public. Anyway, the flutter may be cut out pretty fast, so unless you know that your fancy can pile on the pace at something under fifty, just keep your coin in your pocket. San Fernando, Teotane and Bourrasque are all handicapped as thej' ought to be in the Herrington Welter, though if Marathon is caught in a galloping mood, good fortune (long overdue) is a possibility for Jim Hathaway. Bob Gooseman has a candidate engaged which he may saddle up the second time, and the field is not a classical one.

Of those engaged in the Trial Plate, Dick Johnson has a promising sort in Bay Paul, Tilley may prefer to take on this event with Attention, Moree is very well, while Clarence O’Neil has the disappointing Captain hard in condition at present. Sports are ever witty and one of the best ejaculations that has fell across the hearing of this scribe happened recently. A punter, who chanced to back a winner at a distant meeting, but who had not received notification of the dividend paid, remarked to his hearers that he had dreamt he got a cheque for odd from his firm of bookmakers, the result of the dividend. Quick as a flash, came a retort from one of the audience, who was always reckoned to be of a daft disposition : ‘‘Why in the devil didn’t you cash the cheque before you woke up !” Collapse of the punter! Claude Brown, of Auckland, has been specially engaged to ride Martou in the Foxton Cup, so it is said, in which case the Malachi nag will not suffer on the score of horsemanship-
