CRICKET.

The second round of the competition for the Austin Shield was commenced yesterday, when Himatangi played Glen Oroua on the latter’s ground, and United and Foxtou met on the Park pitch. The Glen Oroua match resulted in a rather easy victory for Himatangi, the margin being 74 runs, and United defeated Foxtou by 16 runs.

UNITED v. FOXTON. This match was set down to commence at 2 p.m., but at that time, as is usual in Foxton cricket, Only one or two of each team had put in an appearance. However, after waiting for almost an hour, the captains decided to make a start, and with the help of several colts, both teams were able to muster elevens. Foxton batted first, and knocked up 58, of which Robinson scored 17 and Muuro 13. Extras were also responsible for 16. The rest of Foxton team failed to make any stand at all. The fielding of the United’s was poor, several catches being dropped. Spelman was the most successful truudler, being responsible for the downfall of five Foxton batsmen for nine runs. United made a very poor start, Gordon being bowled first ball. However, Woods and Bowe put a different complexion on matters, Woods scoring 25 runs and Bowe 37. The rest of the team only scored 14 between them, the innings closing for 74. Although United’s fielding was decidedly poor, it was certainly far ahead of that of Foxtou. Bowling honors were shared by Evans and Whibley, the former securing four wickets for six runs, and the latter six for 25. The following are the scores:—

HIMITANGI v. GLEN OROUA

This match was played at Glen Oroua, and resulted in an easy win for the visiting team, who scored roi to their opponents’ 27. A report had gone about that there was no cricket ground at Glen Oroua, but your scribe denies this, it being, for an up country pitch, a very good one, but to get to the debating ground requires a good knowledge of local geography, as well as getting back to Foxton. The weather was all that could be desired, aud an enjoyable time was spent. For the winners, Death 25, Rori 24, Davey 22, aud Redgrave 11, scored double figures. For the losers, R. Ross, jur., was the principal scorer, making n. Redgrave’s bowling was too good for Glen Oroua. Following are the scores:—
