THE S.S. WAIKARE.

A DARING FEAT. PRESENT POSITION OF WRECK. Invercargill, January 10. A representative of the Southland Times, who has just visited Preservation Inlet, found that one of the chief topics of conversation there in connection with the loss of the Waikare was the exploit of the second officer (Mr Appleyard) in landing under Puysegur Eight in order to send tidings of the disaster over the telephone. Puysegur Lighthouse stands on the summit of a bald promontory, sharp and narrow, and with clifflike sides. The point is rockbound, and the breakers roar against it day and night. Mr Applyard did not enter the inlet and get into touch with the telephone at Te Onerooa, but landed the lifeboat right under the light, scaled the cliff, and entered the lighthouse itself. He again descended, launched the boat through the boulders and breakers, and returned to Dusky Bay in safety. On Sunday a party on the ss. Invercargill visited the scene of the Waikare wreck. One of them writes ;—“The beach was piled with miscellaneous salvage, and the Waikare herself lay on her port side, with her starboard bow heaving up out of the water, and a large part of her forecastle deck high and dry. The visitors pulled over the submerged after-part of the Waikare in a boat. Down in the clear depths of the Sound the foremast and funnel could be seen, but the stern lay at two great a depth to be visible. The ship’s position appears to be extremely precarious, but she is regarded as quite secure as long as fine weather lasts.”
