The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, January 11, 1910. tell-tale TELEPHONE.
Our attention has been directed to the fact that conversations between telephone subscribers are by no means private. It is quite common for a subscriber while waiting for a connection to be compelled to listen to portions of conversations between other people. Certain information of a private nature has, on more than one occasion, thus come to the ears of people it was never meant to reach. Numerous instances could be quoted in support of this. We have discussed the matter with our esteemed postmaster, and are informed that until the present system is improved, conversations per telephone cannot be considered private in the strict meaning of the word. It is well, however, to warn subscribers to be careful when discussing private matters on the telephone.
