whatsoever. In fact I could not find any other part of the river bank that would be so suitable. The main sewer would be laid, as a glance at the plan will show, from this point along Main Street to its junction with Park Street and the Avenue and thence along Park Street to Robinson Street, the subsidiary sewers joining this main sewer at various points. I have provided for the laying of the various sewers on self cleansing gradients, but as at the present time the population of your town is somewhat limited and the sewers designed with a view to future requirements, it will be necessary for automatic flushing tanks to be provided at certain points as shown on the plan. .. The Drainage System which I have designed provides only for the conveyance of sewage and house waste (liquid), storm and surface waters being conveyed in the ordinary surface channels as at present. A combination system for the treatment of both storm water and sewage would, of course, entail a far heavier expenditure than at present proposed. _ . . As will be seen from the accompanying plan ample provision has been made for access to and ventilatioi H he sewers in various places by means of necessary mu.* • The scheme as planned pi'ovides tor the Drainage ot the whole of the nightsoil area as suggested by your Council, the approximate cost of same being eight thousand six hundred pounds (£8,600). Should the above scheme be considered too large an undertaking at the present time, I would point out that by reducing the area served the cost could be correspondingly reduced as already suggested with regard to the Water Supply Scheme. Such a reduction would, of course, not impair in the slightest degree the efficiency of the scheme as a whole. I append hereto a schedule for your information, showing the approximate cost per chain of.the various sewers as proposed. A point I would desire to draw your attention to is the fact that owing to the level of the road being so much higher than that of the various properties fronting same, the laying of a sewer on the upper portion of the Avenue is impracticable. I have, therefore, planned the sewer to be laid on the back boundaries of these properties. This should prove advantageous to the owners and your Council, and doubtless satisfactory arrangements can be made for the laying of the sewer as I have suggested^ I attach hereto schedules, and my estimate of the cost of installing this service complete; also my estimate of the cost of annual up-keep of these systems. The up-keep of the Drainage System will be merely nominal, but that of the Water Supply is as shown in the estimate. In conclusion I may state that should your Council desire to modify the above schemes, I shall be only too happy to wait upon it and discuss the matter fully. I have the honour to be, Sir, Yours Obediently, H. W. Cr.iMiiv, Civil Engineer. SCHEDULE A. ESTIMATE OF COST OF WATER SUPPLY AS PLANNED.
