PARLIAMENT.

A lengthy sitting of Parliament took place on Saturday, lasting till midnight when the Estimates were further considered. The House met again at 10 a.m. yesterday,

An incident of Saturday’s sitting was the defeat of the Government on its attitude regarding the exercise of the powers of the Crown Suits Act. When the State coalminers’ vote was before the House, a staunch Government supporter, Mr Field (Otaki) moved that the vote be reduced by as a protest against the Government in not allowing injured persons and companies to proceed against the State for damages inflicted. The amendment was carried by 30 to 28, The party is apparently again getting a bit out of hand, despite the agreement at the recent caucus.

At the caucus of the Government party yesterday afternoon it was agreed, if the business of the session cannot be completed before Christmas, to stay over Christmas in order to get through the business. In such case the House will adjourn from Friday night till Tuesday morning. The Prime Minister says he is still hopeful of finishing this week, but the Government programme outlined last week must be finished.
