The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, December 18,, 1909. TRAINING CAMPS AND LIQUOR:

Mr E. Newman, M.P. for Manawatu, asked the Minister of Defence whether he will, in selecting sites for training camps required under clause 89 of the Defence Bill, endeavour to secure areas that will be situated not less than five miles from any house licensed to sell alcoholic liquors? He received the following reply: “A Board will be appointed to make inquiries in both islands as to suitable localities, and the representations made by the honorable gentleman will be fully considered.” As the training camps under the new Defence Bill will be composed principally of youths, too much caution cannot be observed by the authorities in keeping them out of harm’s way during off time. Mr Newman is to be 'commended for his foresight, and we hope the Board will give the matter due consideration.
