The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 14, 1909. OUR DAILY BREAD.
A correspondent eleswhere in this issue draws attention to the fact that the price of bread in Foxtou is relatively higher at the present time than in most other towns in New Zealand. We believe this statement to be correct. We cannot explain why this should be. With flour at its present price and reasonable freight, bread should return a fair profit to the local bakers at booked or 3d cash, per alb loaf. We are also informed that there is very little booking done in Foxton, which is a further argument in favour of a reduction in price. Many of our readers may be in the fortunate position of not missing a few extra pence per week, but there are others again less favourably situated —with a number of little mouths to feed—and it is on their behalf that we plead for a reduction in the price of the staff of life. We feel sure that our local bakers, whose bread is equal in point of quality to any produced in the Dominion, will take this hint in the spirit in which it is written.
