' The Town Clerk reported at last night’s Council meeting as follows ; —‘ ‘ The men are at present cutting grass in the cemetery which was rendered necessary owing to the rapidity with which it dried on the hills, the flats will be cut with, a machine to-morrow. During the past month the balance of gravel and tar for footpaths has been carted into the yard, the contractor has finished the work on the footpaths and the paths are now ready to be passed by the Council. I measured the same with the contractor and found that the actual work done was 46 chains,' which, at £4 per chain (labour only) amounts to in addition £0 which was gravel 15s, tar 12s id, railage 16s, carting and labour 19s 6d, making the total cost of the footpaths ,£367 12s 7d. The men were also employed in fixing and taking down ropes in Victoria Park, repairing ruts in Johnston Street, clearing grass off road, also water channels in Main Street, carting spare spoil from Main Street footpaths to adjoining roads, oiling the windmill, clearing grass from water tables in Clyde Street, Harbour and Wharf Streets, clearing slips in Avenue Road drain, cleaning footpath in Union Street and cutting grass in Triangle. After the grass cutting in the Cemetery is finished I am of opinion that one man can do all that is necessary for the next three mouths.”
