The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, December 4,1909

The Sculling Handicap rowed on the Eong Reach of the Manawatu River last Thursday and Friday, provided an event as yet unequalled in the annals of professional sculling in the Southern Hemisphere. In order to make the event attractive, the pick of Australia’s scullers were induced to come over and had their expenses paid and were hospitably treated locally. The retired champion oi the world, Mr Beach, was also in attendance as umpire, and ex-champion Webb was a competitor. The event was unique and one would be led to the conclusion that visitors would have flocked to Foxton from all parts of the Dominion to witness such an attraction. As a matter of fact the attendance only totalled about xooo. To Mr Messeua we tender our praise for his enterprise in initiating and bringing such an event to this district. His sole object was to give an impetus to sculling on the Manawatu, and also to popularise this healthy pastime in the Dominion. If some of our young fellows have been fired with an ambition to emulate Webb or Arnst, then the sculling handicap has not been held in vain.
