CONGO CRUELTIES.
London, Nov. 20,
A great demonstration was held in the Albert Hall to express Christian England’s protest against the cruelties in the Congo. The hall was crowded, many bishops, peers, members of the House of Commons, and clergymen of all denominations being present.
The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Davidsou) presided. He emphasised Britain’s share in the responsibility of creating the Free State.
Dr. Clifford, in moving a resolution which was carried amid enthusiasm in favour of complete reform of the administration in the Congo, strongly attacked King Leopold whom he accused of rapacity and brutality. -Other speakers exonerated the Belgian nation and threw the blame for the abuses on King Leopold. The Rev Silvester Horne spoke of people being done to death in order that “European financiers may flourish and a millionaire libertine upon a throne give rein to his passions.”
