THE CHRISTCHURCH MURDER.
ROBERTS FOUND GUILTY,
RECOMMENDATION TO
MERCY,
DEATH SENTENCE PASSED
Christchurch, Nov. 18
The trial of Arthur John Wilson Roberts for the murder of Alice Edith Newman, was continued at the Supreme Court to-day before Mr Justice Deuuiston. His Honour, in summing up, said the two main points for the jury to consider were : —(i) Did the prisoner kill Alice Newman. (2) Is it proved to you that he was at the lime labouring under disease of mind to such an extent as to render him incapable of understanding the nature of and quality of the act and knowing that such act was wrong ? After about an hour and a half’s retirement the jury returned answers of “yes” on the first issue and “no” on the second. The verdict was therefore guilty. The jury added a rider making a strong recommendation to mercy.
In delivering sentence his Honor said the recommendation to mercy would be forwarded to the proper authorities. He then assumed the black cap and sentenced the prisoner to be hanged.
Roberts heard the sentence without any visible signs of emotion.
