HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A general meeting of 'the above was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Mr Alex. Speirs (president) presided over an attendance of about 25 members, including eight ladies. Before the minutes were passed, Mr Nye asked what provision had been made for the accommodation of poultry and dogs.—The Secretary explained that a lean-to would be erected at the side of the hall, which would accommodate poultry and dogs, and a further extension would be utilised as a tea-room. It was resolved thaj; exhibitors could if they so desired, take the dogs home on the night of the Show and bring them baqk the next day.
Special donations were received from Mr W. Nye (10s) and Mrs Collins, senr. (ss). which it was decided to allocate for collections of small birds’ eggs It was decided to pay is per 100 for small birds’ eggs. Owing to the indisposition of Mrs Collins senr., Mrs Jeuks was appointed to act with Mrs Stewart to canvass the town and district for subscriptions, and enroll new members. The details in connection with the erection of tea room, etc., were left in the hands of the Chairman and Secretary. Mr Mayo, of Aorangi, wrote regretting his inability to officiate as judge of the fruit division, and his brother, Mr F. W. Mayo, was appointed to carry out that duty ; Mr J. Galland wrote consenting to act as judge® of the children’s exhibits. It was decided to ask Mrs Witchell to officiate as judge of the fancy work class. Mrs Webb-Joues and Mr F. W. Mayo wrote consenting to officiate as judges, and Mr John Davies promised to obtain the services of a substitute to judge the dairy produce.
It was decided to again obtain the services of Mr Fitzherbert, of Levin, to judge the dog and poultry classes. It was decided to employ the services of a night watchman, and Mr Martin’s name was suggested. The question of alloting space for “exhibition only ’’ was left in the hands of the Chairman and Secretary. It was decided to open the Show at 2 p.m,, and that Mr Fd. Newman, M.P., be asked to perform the ceremony, failing him, .the President. It was decided to ask the Borough Band to play a selection ot music outside the hall on both evenings of the Show.
