GOVERNOR-GENERAESHIP
Cape Town, Oct. 30
A bitter discussion is proceeding in South Africa over the rumoured appointment of Mr Herbert Gladstone, the Home Secretary to the Governor-Generalship. Many people object to a name which, they declare, has been associated with the bitterest controversy in South African history. The Natal Mercury says: It would be the worst possible selection.
The Transvaal Reader says : Mr Gladstone’s experience with the Suffragettes would qualify him to handle the Asiatic passive resisters.
The Star declares that if the choice is limited to the present Cabinet they might go further and fare worse.
London, October 30
The Times strongly opposes the appointment of a member of the Government to any of the three positions becoming vacant-—Vice-roy of India, Governor-General of Canada, and Governor-General of South Africa —especially the appointment of failures or nonentities.
