CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary’s office last night. Present:—Dr. Mandl (chairman), Messrs Levett, Bullard,. Phillips, Rimmer, Speirs and Rev Aitken. A letter was read from Mr B. R. Gardener, Mayor of Levin, in reference to the Levin-Marton railway. —It was decided to advise Mr Gardener that the Chamber would endeavour to send two delegates on the deputation to the Premier on the matter.
The Chief Postmaster wrote, advising that the request for a direct mail service between Foxton and Makowhai had been acceded to and would take effect from November 1 st.
The by-laws for the proposed Association of Chambers of Commerce, on which Mr Aitken had been appointed to furnish a report, were approved with the exception of one by-law, which stated that the Standing Committee shall consist of the President of the Association and the Presidents of the Chambers in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. On Mr Aitken’s suggestion it was decided to ask that the Standing Committee also include three members to be elected at the annual meeting from Chambers outside the four cities.
The following new members were elected: Messrs Gray, Had* field, Evans and Patterson, alter which the meeting terminated.
