ALFRED THE GREAT.
To-day, according to the old calendar, is the anniversary of the death of King Alfred the Great. He possessed great virtues and shining talents, and in the early days of England’s troubles saved his country from ruin. Hume says : “The merit of this great prince, both in public and private life, may with advantage be set in opposition to that of any monarch or citizen which the annals of any age or any nation can present to us.” He seems, indeed to be a model of a perfect character, and was foremost amongst the religious of his day, so much so that all through the centuries the Church has given to him the immortal name “Blessed Alfred,’’ He was born in 849 and died in 901. His was a short life, but much was accomplished. Hume again says: “Both living and dead, Allred was regarded by foreigners, no less than by his own subjects, as the greatest prince after Charlemagne that ever appeared in Europe during several ages, and as one of the wisest and best that ever adorned the annals of any nation.”
