THE FOXTON BAR.
HARBOURMASTER’S REPORT
The following is the Harbourmaster’s report on the Foxton bar for the present month: —
“I have the honour to inform you that during the present mouth I believe the depth of water on the Manawatu Bar has been at h.w.s.t. roft., and at h.w.n.t. 7ft. 6iu. Since my last report the bar has worked to the south. The last time I was able to sound the bar was on the 15th iust., and found 1 oft. at h.w. in line with beacons; since then masters of vessels have reported that they have touched when entering. Apparently the bar has spread, showing no defined channel, consequently I wall take the first opportunity to find out where the deepest water is. The river has considerably improved from the South Head to Rush Flat Corner, being quite straight and carrying good water; from that point to Hartley’s Bend the river is cutting into the east bank and from Hartley’s Bend to Robinson’s there is good water on the crossings, being about roft* at s.t. The river at Duncan’s has gone back to the old channel, close to the eastern bank.”
