THE MAYOR AND THE GAS
PROPRIETARY, At last night’s Borough Council the Mayor asked the Clerk to read the following letter he (the Mayor) had forwarded to the secretary of the Gas Works Proprietary, of which the Mayor is a member; — “Sir. —Will you please place the enclosed before the first meeting of the Proprietary. As negotiations are about to be commenced between the Proprietary and the Foxton Borough Council for the purchase of the gasworks, it can be easily seen that it would be quite impossible to act on behalf of both parties, and as I have the honour to represent the Council In my position as Mayor, I deem it my duty to act on behalf of the Council, in so far as I may be able to guide this matter in the best interests of the ratepayers. I shall therefore from this date cease to take any part as a member of the Proprietary in any matters relating to the proposed purchase, but shall act as before stated in the interest of the borough. ’ ’
Our reporter was particularly requested to publish the above letter. While commending the Mayor for the sentiments therein contained, and believing him to be — like Caesar’s wife—above suspicion, we must direct attention, his
attention also, to clause 8 of section 51 of the Municipal Corporations Act, also section 52 clause (2) of the same Act.
