FREEZING WORKS.
Messrs J. Balsillie and Wingate addressed a meeting of farmers in the sale yards at Palmerston on Thursday last upon the proposal to establish a freezing works upon this coast. The advantages that would follow the institution of the works were pointed out by both speakers, and farmers were urged to have thdir own establishment, irrespective altogether of the Wairarapa company. It was admitted that had the Wairarapa works been erected on the sea coast this side of the range it would have suited all parties, but the site eventually decided upon was no good to farmers in this district. It was added that the Wairarapa company would liberate all farmers on this coast from applications for shares made, and it was quite possible to erect works in this district. It was a reflection upon farmers that work like this should be exploited by private companies instead of being run by the farmers themselves. The financial advantages would be very great if the works were carried on properly. Mr Balsillie read the memorandum of agreement that had been drawn up with regard f 0 the share list, and this will be placed before farmers at an early date, so as to gauge the support forthcoming. Seen after the meeting, Mr Wingate informed a Standard representative that as soon as they got 200 shares of £5 each taken up they could enter into negotiations for the purchase of the Longburn works. Mr Wingate added that when the Wairarapa concern was .still before the farmers he had
written Home for full details regarding the purchase ol the Longburn works. These details he expected at an early date, and they would be placed at the disposal of the proposed Manawatu company.
