A PLUCKY CONSTABLE.
The Auckland Star of October 4th publishes an article relative to an exciting incident and a constable’s plucky action. A two-horse four-wheeler bolted down Shortland St., dashed into and carried away a verandah post in front of Messrs Sharland and Co’s. As they came Into Queen St., Constable Huntley, who was standing near by, rushed out at the horses’ heads and grabbed hold of the harness like a flash with the object of stopping the runaways. He was borne down on the ground and appeared to be inextricably mixed up with bar; ness, cab and horses. Everybody thought that he must be kicked to death. The wheel of the cab passed over his hat. A large crowd witnessed the constable’s extraordinarily plucky action, and he was loudly applauded for what he did. Constable Huntley deserves every credit for a conspicuous piece of bravery. Luckily nobody sustained serious hurt. Constable Huntley, who was covered in dust, Was taken into the office of the New Zealand Insurance Company, where he had a brush down and appeared to be none the worse for his adventure. [Constable Huntley above referred to is a brother of Mr G. Huntley, of Foxton, and is a new arrival in New Zealand. * Prior to coming out he was a member of the Metropolitan Police, and also had a good training in the British Navy.] '
