HEMP INDUSTRY.
% CONTRACT SYSTEM,
We have been handed the following by the Secretary of the Mauawatu Flaxmills’ Employees Union :
On the sgth ultimo Mr L. Seifert offered to, his RangiUne employees contracts similar to those formerly worked by Messrs Broad and Reeve. Mr Seifert urged the acceptance of the system mainly on the question of overtime, contending that the present allowance (3 hours per week at time and a quarter), was not worth keeping up steam for. The men however, took full advantage of Mr Justice Sim’s remarks that no employer could discharge men for refusing to sign, and by a firm and uncompromising refusal voiced their adherence alike to the existing award and to the principles of the organisation to which they belong. This is the second case since the recent decision in which the men have refused to exchange award rates for contract. The fact that contractors. have no claim under the Workers’ Compensation Act, the Factories Act, and the Farm Labourers’ Accommodation Act doubtless adds to the dislike which the men appear to have of any contact suggestions.
