SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above was held on Tuesday night. Present : —-Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev Aitken (secretary), Bullard, Alex Speirs, T, Henderson and S. Read. The headmaster was also present. An apology for absence was received from Mr Betty.—rMr Speirs, visitor for the mouth, reported as to necessary minor matters he had carried out and his action was endorsed.

The headmaster’s report stated that the average attendance for the past fortnight had been 269 and 281, out of a roll number of 315. The roll number this week is 319, being 14 higher than when he took up his duties. The pupils were showing a desire to make good attendances. One of the gates and the horse fence had been repaired by some of the elder boys. An accident was reported. The report concluded by stating that if the present attendance was maintained an extra teacher would be appointed next quarter. —The report was adopted. Several accounts were passed for payment. —It was resolved to ask the Board to pay for repairs to the waste water well in the playground. It was decided to award good attendance certificates to those who had won them last year and the headmaster was asked to attend to same.

The Chairman reported that Mr Izaac, of the Education Department, had visited the old school in reference to its suitability for technical purposes and equipment for cookery. It was decided to write to the official urging him to recommend the granting by the Department ot the sum asked for for equipment of cookery and woodwork classes.

The question of altering the school hours was introduced by the headmaster. The suggestion was that the school open at 9 a.m. instead of 9.30, luncheon hour between 12 and 1 p.m., aud close at 3 p.m. instead of 3.30 p.m.—lt was decided to hold the subject over till next meeting. Messrs Aitken and Betty were appointed visitors for the mouth.
